This ended up as a very short side quest, already back on ice. Turns out that current steamlink software doesnt play well with windows to mac, so it is essentially useless for me. Actually considering getting a steamdeck instead. PS5 was also a plan at one point, but keeping games at one platform like steam seams like a good idea to me, as i can login to steam on a pc at any point if i want to play games on pc in the future. Doesnt make sense to buy games on both ps5 and steam nowdays. I rarely actually play anything (other than minecraft at the moment) anyway. I havent owned a console since ps2, and i cannot really say i miss it that much anyway.

So, steamlink project is dead for now.

At the moment, almost everything runs as i want it to run on this setup. Storage is a tad slow, and i am still looking for a extra place to dump my stuff to as a backup, but that will happen soon enough. All “super” important data is ofcourse backed up, but i would really like a full mirror or my storage mount somewhere aswell. This is costly to do, so i am looking for solutions.

Other than that, i ended up ditching ovh due to their stupid support over something even more stupid. Not going to go into detail about that here, but i ended up with another host in Frankfurt at this point. How long will i stay here? Well, time will tell i guess. But at the moment, it seems all good.

Past week i have also setup a little java minecraft server for myself and a few friends to hang out. I have touced minecraft in the past, but never anything serious. My 5 year old kid also loved it – However due to his conditions (mainly low functioning autist), the most fun part for him was to spawn in different animals and just.. watch them. It made his day, so im all good for that. 🙂

I am a bit strangled on resources currently, but i can upgrade it at any time, so no worries here. I do have a usecase for a windows vps aswell for some specific tools i use from time to time, and i plan to run that in proxmox on the same server. I know, i know… All eggs in one basket and all that. But it is way simpler for me to manage it, and there are full exports of the server every 6 hours at the moment to offsite storage + my own “unlimited” storage mount. It will take me litterally less than 1 hour getting it up and running again somewhere else, and nothing i host is mission critical at all – It is mostly “good to have” stuff for myself, my family and a couple friends.

Also doing some finishing touches on a couple of other hosts around, including the one i am currently using. i will post those at a later time. I need to collect some more data and polish the articles before i want to publish them.

Over the past years i pretty much stopped any form of serious gaming, and i am not planning to take it up again. Actually, i put gaming so far into the closet that i started using macbooks. After using macbooks for some time, i will never return to a windows machine as my main again.

However, newest mac hardware with any form of performance for a little newer games, is very expensive. Actually so expensive that i consider strongly to retire my current macbook and go back to a normal windows desktop i already have the hardware for. But i want to try setting up the desktop in a closet with a ethernet connection, and put SteamLink on it first. Since i am so used to the screen and keyboard on my macbook pro at this point, it might actually be a decent solution. Will be tested over the next few days, and i will update about it!

I know “everyone” will tell me to just game on the desktop directly. But you have to remember, i live in a camper this winter, and space is somewhat limited. I dont want to give up so much space “permanently” to a setup with keyboard, monitor and so on. So i will test this out first! 🙂

In my last post i did say i was going to update and put some more stuff here. I did put up some downloads – but thats it. However, in backend, alot of stuff is happening, including moving tons of data to a encrypted rclone mount. Better safe than sorry, right? This will take some time. Thankfully i have fast and unlimited bandwidth, but due to somewhat limited local storage, it still takes longer than it should. Once this is done, i will keep going with this website. Most of the visitors here are bots and crawlers, but there are actually quite alot of normal ips with normal traffic checking in here almost daily – I dont understand why, but it is fun anyway.

Today i plan to make some updates here, add some more useless bullshit, and possibly publish a review i have been working on. I still have a small dispute with this provider that i want to get resolved first before i publish the story here, but ill consider putting it online a little later.

I dont want to go to much into details about anything in my personal life on a public website, but i can share something : I will be living in a camper over winter this year, without my ex girlfriend and kiddo. They will probably be here alot though. Found myself a good spot in a camp site with everything i need (showers, water, power etc), and pricing within reason for power included in the rent for the spot. The norwegian winters can be pretty hard (down to -25C), and also pretty long sometimes, so it will be interesting to adapt to such a lifestyle. I should point out that i am doing this not because i have to, but because i want to. I will be able to save tons of money this way, and will make me able to get back on my feet again after this life changing situation.

Anyway, designing power systems, solar, starlink internet, heating, cooking and alot more is alot of fun, and very interesting. I have already been living in the camper for a while, but not in extreme cold weather. Will be interesting to see what i missed!

I will probably share some photos and updates regarding this going forward. 🙂

And out of all possible providers out there, i actually ended up with ovh again. I have many reasons for this, but the main reason is the ability to scale as i go, and pay for what i need. The unlimited bandwidth is also a very nice touch.

Ovh is actually a little expensive to use for the stuff i want to host, but i will bite the bullet anyway, due to all the other advantages i get for it. Stability is also a majour key point here.

Time will tell if this is going to work out of not. But for now, it seems promising. Ill post some update about this at a later point, already have quite alot of information made, and a review is in the making.

So im trying to figure out how i want stuff to work, regarding storage, backups and stuff like that. As of today, i run most of my stuff on a rclone mount, and that seems to work fine. Even though i trust the storage provider, i want another copy of my data somewhere, but that gets complicated / expensive really fast when you store as much data as i do.

So past days i have been testing different providers, and for some reason, none seems to be able to deliver the performance i need, for a price i can live with. There are plenty of providers who claim they can offer it, but when shit hits the fan and you start pushing the resources you have, they start complaining. Why should you buy a server with 4 cores, if you are not able to use more than 10% of the capasity for any extended period of time? Not the way i want to go.

On the other hand, i stumbled across multible GOOD providers, and some reviews are comming later about them.

My life situation have changed alot since last time i tinkered around with projects like this. Due to personal reasons, i now have some more time on my hands to play with things like that. Also, i suddenly needed some server resources again to satisfy some of my own needs in this new life situation, so here it is.

This site will be nothing serious, and will probably just be some random site with no updates, tons of errors, downtimes and more stuff like that. However, i wanted something to play with, so here it is.
